Advanced Treatment for Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Diabetic Macular Edema

A new alternative treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema (DME) is now available at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. The Susvimo™ implant, is the first and only continuous delivery treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration to help maintain vision for people with wet-AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and DME. The new technology significantly reduces the treatment burden of monthly injections.

Patients with wet-AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and DME experience blurring or distortion and eventually reduction in their central vision, making it difficult to perform normal daily activities such as driving, reading, and recognizing faces.

What is Susvimo?
Susvimo is a prescription medication used to treat patients with wet-AMD, diabetic retinopathy, and DME. A one-time surgical outpatient procedure places the Susvimo port (about the size of a grain of rice) into the eye to deliver the medication. The implant allows patients to preserve their vision with less frequent treatments.

How does Susvimo work?
Following the procedure, medication is slowly released into the eye, 24/7. The medication dispensed (ranibizumab) is the same medicine that is commonly delivered through monthly eye injections.

Patients with wet-AMD and DME receive 6-month refills in their doctor’s office (9-month refills are indicated for patients with diabetic retinopathy). The medication refills are delivered into the implanted port, eliminating the need to inject the medicine into the eye itself. Patients receive the same, effective treatment more conveniently and comfortably—and just as importantly continuously.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Susvimo?
Patients should meet with their retina specialist to determine if they are eligible. Your physician will review your medical history, the condition of the eye. and your lifestyle to help determine the best treatment for your condition.
