Suture Suspension Facial Plastic Surgery - "The Thread Lift" - Now Offered at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary

New York, NY (July 2005) -- The Department of Plastic Surgery at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is pleased to announce the availability of minimally invasive plastic surgery procedures such as suture suspension facial plastic surgery, also known as the "Thread Lift."

The technique, which has been gradually refined over the past 15 years, allows for the correction of a moderate degree of sagging, usually expressed as the early appearance of a tired look, with a 30-40 minute outpatient procedure under a little local anesthesia. Most patients are able to return to work or social activity on a limited basis the next day and the discomfort is minimal. "If you have it done today, you could keep a social engagement tomorrow," said Donald Wood-Smith, MD, Chairman of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Several special sutures are passed from within the hairline to strategic points in the cheek, brow or neck to correct the fallen structures to their prior positions. No hair is shaved and since minimal entry sites are used no bandages are required. Patients need to shampoo daily for several days and take prophylactic antibiotics.

The technique is suited to patients with early signs of aging (ie, a tired appearance) but can be applied to most patients with a more pronounced sagging who are candidates for either a mini or full-face lift operation.

The new program for minimally invasive plastic surgery is under the direction of Dr. Wood-Smith and attending plastic surgeon Sharon Giese, MD. The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary also conducts a Cosmetic Surgery fellowship training program, which offers affordable plastic surgery options. For that program, contact 212-979-4493 for a screening appointment with the plastic surgery fellows.
