The head is divided into the face (visceral cranium) and the brain cavity (neuro cranium). The brain cavity is divided into the anterior, middle and posterior fossa. The anterior cranial fossa is contiguous with the face and sinuses.

Tumors of these sites can extend into the anterior cranial fossa. The middle and posterior fossa contain the inner ear and related brain structures which serve balance, hearing and cranial nerves.
