Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous Flap (TRAM)

During TRAM flap surgery, a physician would use skin, fat, and muscle from the abdomen to recreate breasts. While a well-known procedure, TRAM’s biggest drawback is that it requires the removal of an abdominal muscle, which caused weakness in a woman’s body. This procedure is no longer offered at NYEE because we can now offer DIEP flap surgery, a muscle-sparing procedure and the gold-standard in autologous breast reconstruction surgery.
