NYEE Maintains World Leadership Providing International Ophthalmology Fellowships

ICO FellowshipsNEW YORK, NY (May 2010) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has been awarded a record number of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) fellowships, which are considered among the most prestigious international training awards in ophthalmology.

Robert Ritch, MD, NYEE’s Chief of Glaucoma Services and Director of International Training, has been instrumental in arranging these fellowships. He says, “The goal is to help promising young ophthalmologists from developing nations acquire specialized diagnostic, medical and surgical techniques which will better preserve and restore vision to millions in their home countries.”

There are approximately 50 ICO Fellowships around the world each year, and NYEE now trains one of the largest number of international eye fellows of any medical center.

The most recent roster includes:

  • Vipul Arora, MD Uttaranchai, India(oculoplastics);
  • Tinku Bali-Razdan, MD New Dehli, India (vitreoretinal);
  • Wang Haiyan, MD, China (retina);
  • Tsung-Yu Ho, MD Taipei, Taiwan (glaucoma);
  • Pratima Kathil, MD Chennai, India (ocular oncology);
  • Xin Liu, MD Harbin, China (glaucoma & retina);
  • Ahmed Elsayed Abdel Maksoud, MD, Alexandria, Egypt(cornea);
  • Jutatat Pomsathit, MD Thailand (oculoplastics); and
  • Meng Jasmine Zhao, Bejing, China (uveitis).
