Close up image of the fundusThe first step toward the new goal of protecting nerve cells from damage and the future goal of optic nerve regeneration is the cultivation of retinal ganglion cells. These are the cells damaged in glaucoma. Retinal ganglion cells being grown in the Tissue Culture Laboratory of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary are helping to break down the barriers between the possible and what was always thought to be the impossible.

The Glaucoma Center at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary

The Glaucoma Center at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary was founded in 1983 by Dr. Robert Ritch. He and his associate, Dr. Jeffrey Liebmann, have developed The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary into a prominent glaucoma research facility. Significant strides have been made in the development of new treatment modalities for glaucoma, understanding the anatomic abnormalities in glaucoma through new ocular imaging devices, tissue culture and cell biology studies, and nationwide clinical trials sponsored by the National Eye Institute.

To expand our ability to combat glaucoma, your help is needed!

1. Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM), to provide accurate diagnosis

OCT
2. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), to investigate the pathogenesis of glaucoma injury and enhance early detection.

Confocal SLO
3. Confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy to evaluate the optic nerve.

Reducing Blindness by Increasing Knowledge and Awareness

Since glaucoma usually strikes without symptoms. the first line of defense is public awareness, in order to encourage early detection and treatment, we are using several new approaches to enhance public awareness.

(1) Internet and the World Wide Web
In 1996 we established our presence on the Internet with the glaucoma.net website.

(2) Publications
Research updates and educational materials for patients and their families.

(3) Continuing education for eye care professionals and educational material for patients.
The only way to cure a disease is to commit our resources to it. With your generous support we can rise to the forefront of research, education and patient care. While our knowledge of glaucoma has expanded rapidly, a great deal remains to be done.
