Crowded dancefloor at the Gala"The Spirit of the City Gala" is Theme for The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary 2001 Holiday Ball

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani Receives The Edward Delafield Leadership Award

Mayor Rudolph Giuliani received the Edward Delafield Leadership Award for his courage, compassion, sensitivity and assuring leadership as Mayor of the City of New York, at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary's "The Spirit of the City Gala."

The festive event, held Wednesday, December 5, 2001, at The Pierre in New York City, benefited a new state-of-the-art Microsurgical Education Center, a training and teaching facility at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary that will offer surgeons the opportunity to practice and refine complex microsurgical techniques. 325 persons were in attendance at the black tie event that generated $268,000 in proceeds.

Also honored was Robert C. Della Rocca, M.D., of Port Chester, NY, recipient of the John Kearney Rodgers Physician of the Year Award for excellence in medicine. Dr. Della Rocca is a widely respected physician in the field of ophthalmology and has served as Chief of Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive and Orbital Surgery at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for more than 20 years.

The Margaret Loeb Kempner Award for community service was awarded to the Pharmacia Corporation. Paul G. Chaney, Vice President, Pharmaceutical Ophthalmology, at Pharmacia Corporation accepted the award on behalf of the pharmaceutical firm.

Joseph P. Corcoran, President and CEO, said, "I am pleased to recognize our honorees this special evening, for they have brought distinction not only to themselves but have been leaders in their respective fields, creating a better world for us all."

International philanthropist Florence D'Urso served as Honorary Chairman, WABC-TV's Scott Clark was the master of ceremonies, WCBS-TV's Ernie Anastos was a special Guest Host and Journal chairperson was Susan Liebowitz.

Guests were treated to superb gourmet cuisine by candlelight and danced to the music of the Hank Lane Orchestra. An entertainment highlight of the evening was a performance by the "all New York Eye and Ear Infirmary choral society," a group of doctors, trustees and friends of the hospital -- all of whom are gifted musicians in their own right.
