Welcome from the Chairman

The Plastic Surgery Department at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE) is staffed by more than 50 of the most outstanding plastic surgeons in the region. Patients in need of reconstructive surgery following trauma, disease, or congenital malformation, or those desiring elective cosmetic surgery, can benefit from the specialty care provided at NYEE.

Many of the surgeons specialize in individual areas of plastic surgery such as cosmetic surgery, breast surgery, reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, and microvascular reparative surgery.

Clinical Services and Special Areas of Expertise

Microvascular surgery: State-of-the-art clinical innovations at NYEE are improving people's lives in many areas. Operations involving microvascular transfer of tissues from the abdomen or the buttocks are used to repair the tissue loss after mastectomy for breast cancer. Microvascular techniques are also available to reattach missing digits and reconstruct missing thumbs by transfer of the great toe to the area of the missing digit.

Congenital deformities: Repair of cleft lip and palate malformation and more massive deformities involving the nasal and orbital regions are performed to give patients a more normal appearance and vastly improved quality of life.

Skin cancer:  Along with other more involved cancers, lesions with extensive loss of tissue
require microvascular and other techniques to restore the patient to near normal function and appearance.

Elective cosmetic plastic surgery, minimally invasive: A wide array of the latest techniques are offered, beginning with advanced lasers for surface repair to ultrasonic and laser liposuction. Other minimally invasive cosmetic procedures include"no scar lower eyelid plastic" techniques. Fat grafting is becoming an increasingly important technique in this area.

Facial plastic operations: The “face lift” is combined with upper and lower eyelid plastic procedures performed with many variations such as the short scar technique, the vertical lift technique, and endoscopic surgically assisted techniques. The latest laser devices are also available to further improve our results.

Nasal plastic operations: Both primary and secondary are featured, with particular emphasis on reconstructing unhappy results that are frequently seen following surgery by unqualified surgeons.

Cosmetic breast surgery: Breast augmentation with the latest implant designs and approaches is a frequent procedure, as is reduction of the overly large breast.

Abdominoplasty [tummy tuck/mommy makeover]: Often combined with liposuction of the flanks, the “mommy makeover” is an increasingly common set of procedures enabling many women to resume wearing bikini bathing suits, etc. In many instances, the patient may return home on the day of surgery and many patients are able to return to limited activities 7 to 10 days following the operation.

Liposuction: Suction-assisted fat removal can be done in many body regions and is mostly conducted on an outpatient basis. With refinement of techniques, transfer of the patient’s fat to other regions is becoming increasingly popular as well.

Research:  Transfer of lymphatic glands by microvascular techniques has recently been introduced to us by Corinne Becker, a French plastic surgeon. She pioneered this operation and has joined the NYEE staff in order to introduce this technique which has many unique and here- to-fore unavailable applications.

Other Services

Affordable Plastic Surgery Program provides private cosmetic surgery with attractive package pricing as a service to the community for patients who might otherwise not be able to afford such care.

Fellowship in Postgraduate Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Program offers procedures through a teaching program in which doctors who have completed a full Board of Plastic Surgery residency program elect to spend an extra year of cosmetic plastic surgery under the tutelage of cosmetic plastic surgery staff experts instead of immediately entering private practice. The hospital is pleased to provide this further aid to those in the community desiring cosmetic plastic surgery but who are financially challenged.

The Plastic Surgery Staff at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is at the cutting edge of world plastic surgery techniques both in the areas of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is a natural complement to New York Eye and Ear’s other core services and brings new hope to some 1,000 patients annually.
