Scope of Pharmacy Services

  • The Department of Pharmacy Services is designed to meet the needs of both patients and other departments of the Infirmary.  It provides prescribed medications and counseling about medications to inpatients and ambulatory care patients.  It also provides drug information to medical and nursing staff and other health care professionals who are involved with prescribing or administering drugs to patients.
  • Our highly trained pharmacists are licensed by the State of New York and are required to complete fifteen hours of continuing education per year.  Additional departmental in-service programs are conducted to acquaint the staff with new drugs and procedures that are relevant to the practice of ophthalmology and otolaryngology.
  • The Infirmary formulary of drugs is reviewed and maintained by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.  All requests for new additions to the formulary are first reviewed by the committee for safety and efficacy.  Quality and drug utilization reviews are performed to monitor the usage and effectiveness of formulary drugs.
  • The Pharmacy utilizes a vast array of informational healthcare resources, such as pharmaceutical and medical journals and online medical resources to provide expanded drug information to all health care professionals and patients.
  • The Pharmacy securely, stores, handles and distributes medications throughout the infirmary. All  drugs are procured, stored and dispensed according to federal, state and city laws and regulations. Many of the medications stocked in the Pharmacy have a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which also educates staff members regarding the proper handling and storage of hazardous medications.
  • The Department of Pharmacy Services prepares many specialty IV admixtures by compounding sterile and non-sterile pharmaceuticals that are not commercially available and are used in the treatment of diseases and medical conditions treated at the Infirmary.
  • The Department of Pharmacy Services participates in Investigational Study Protocols.
  • Pharmacists serve as members of the following performance improvement committees within the hospital:
    • Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee
    • Infection Control Committee
    • Quality Council
    • Standardization Committee
    • Institutional Review Board
    • Patient Safety Committee
    • Pharmacy and Nursing Committee
    • Continual Survey Readiness Committee
