Viral neuronitis is a viral inflammation of the balance portion of the nerve of hearing and balance (8th Cranial Nerve). The patients history is critical in establishing the presence of a systemic viral infection in proximity to the onset of vertigo. There is usually no hearing loss or tinnitus.
Symptoms usually resolve within several days to weeks. Treatment is with oral medications that minimize dizziness, such as meclizine (antivert, bonine).
