Dehiscent superior semicircular canal syndrome (DSSCS)

Dehiscent superior semicircular canal syndrome (DSSCS) is an unusual disorder in which there is a loss of bone that surrounds the organ of balance. The cause is unknown.

The most common symptom is episodic dizziness or vertigo, often precipitated by loud noise, blowing the nose or lifting heavy objects. Hearing loss is common. The diagnosis is confirmed by x-ray evaluation, with computed tomography (CT) of the ear. Treatment is surgical.
