What services are offered at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary?
This long established Department is staffed by some 40 Plastic Surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only Board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify Plastic Surgeons. The areas of special interest and expertise of these surgeons range from cosmetic surgery of the head and neck region, to hand surgery, to breast cosmetic and Reconstructive surgery, to liposuction, to reconstruction of congenital deformities and the treatment of massive trauma. In addition we have a center for Laser Surgery with world renowned Laser Surgeons who treat skin vascular problems and a wide variety of skin cancers.
The Department also has a division of Oral Surgery where our Oral Surgeons perform corrective jaw surgery and offer a superb dental implant service. Many of our surgeons will collaborate with one another on complicated cases to provide the patient with optimal care by surgeons each expert in specialized areas.
How do I choose a plastic surgeon?
Once a patient has decided upon the need for Plastic Surgeons care or such care has been recommended by their Physician one must seek out and decide upon a surgeon specialized in the patient's field of interest. When deciding on a plastic surgeon, it is imperative that one chooses a physician "Board Certified" by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
What Is A Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon?
A Board-Certified plastic surgeon has completed at least five years of residency in surgery, two of which include training in "aesthetic" or "cosmetic" procedures. The physicians then take qualifying exams administered by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You may go one step further when choosing a Board-certified plastic surgeon by asking if he/she is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
Board-Certified physicians have the education and background to provide the highest quality, state-of-the-art care in aesthetic plastic surgery. They have met requirements that promise you a combination of the best surgical skill and artistic judgment that an aesthetic plastic surgeon can achieve - one whose results will reflect the balance and harmony found in nature.
In addition to the American Board of Plastic Surgery certification and membership in ASAPS, the physicians must submit documentation of major aesthetic surgical cases performed during the previous year. They must also be sponsored by two ASAPS members, at least one of whom practices in the same geographical area. After thorough committee review, the candidates then must be elected through the entire membership. After joining ASAPS the physicians continually attend scientific meetings, symposia and workshops sponsored by the organization.
It is important to note here that there are more than 100 certifying boards NOT recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties, an organization recognized by the American Medical Association and other major hospital insurance and government authorities. Therefore, be sure your physician's credentials read "American Board of Plastic Surgery Accredited".
