Immittance and Acoustic Reflex Testing

Immittance and Acoustic Reflex testing do not measure the level of a person's hearing. These tests are objective measurements that will provide information about the status of the middle and inner ear. These tests do not require any participation from the patient.

Tympanometry, one aspect of immittance testing, measures the mobility of the eardrum. Tympanometry is often used in children to identify middle ear fluid. It is tested by placing a soft probe into the patient's ear and varying pressure levels to move the eardrum.

Acoustic Reflex Testing is tested by introducing a sound into the ear and looking for the muscles in the ear to contract. This provides useful diagnostic information about middle and inner ear functioning and hearing loss.
