Obstructive Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy

Principal Investigator: Jay Dolitsky, M.D.

Objective: We are currently focusing on two approaches to studying obstructive adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

Children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and obstructive symptoms were offered a trial of Omeprazole for six weeks in lieu of surgery. To date, twenty-eight patients have completed the six week course. They have been examined for tonsillar size and parents have completed questionnaires regarding their obstructive symptoms (pre- and post-treatment). A complete analysis of the results is pending.

Children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy for adenotonsillar hypertrophy with obstruction were assessed through parental questionnaires regarding the severity their obstructive and gastroesophageal reflux symptoms. Assays of their serum and tonsils were performed to identify the presence or absence of H. pylori. Children undergoing strabismus surgery were used as controls using the questionnaires and serum assay.
