Objective: In this study, we will seek to determine the extent to which treatment has been incorporated into routine practice among Medicare recipients with head and neck cancer and to identify patients characteristics that might be associated with a high probability of non-treatment. Because some clinicians may omit certain therapy for the elderly, we will measure the use rates of any treatment as well as those of combined-modality therapy. 

The study will help to improve the quality of clinical practice for elderly with head and neck cancer. The Medicare program provides health insurance for 97% of the United States population aged 65 and older. The SEER and Medicare data have been linked to facilitate population-based studies of the medical and economic outcomes of cancer treatment. Ninety-four percent of patients in the SEER Program aged 65 or older have been successfully linked to their Medicare records. Co-Investigator is Stimson Schantz, MD.
