Joseph B. Walsh, M.D.The Department of Ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is the region's most comprehensive eye care center. As early as 1820, in what were the first successful operations in the United States for congenital cataracts, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary surgeons restored the vision of three patients who were born blind. Today, ophthalmologists utilizing the most technologically advanced equipment and surgical techniques perform 7,725 cataract extractions per year, along with 4,500 other surgical procedures. The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is the academic center for the Department of Ophthalmology at New York Medical College, which consists of seven affiliated hospitals in two resident training programs. At The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, the Department is administered by the Chairman, Surgeon Directors, Specialty Service Directors, Program Director, Director of Residency Training and Director of Medical Student Education as well as the Medical Director of Out Patient Clinics. The residents are supervised directly in patient care by the attending physicians of the medical staff. The Department sponsors a daily lecture with additional special programs such as a Visiting Professor Lecture Series and a variety of courses and conferences for physicians and allied health personnel from all over the world. The Department has produced numerous advances in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, and continues to sponsor research in numerous fields of eye and vision research. The Glaucoma Center of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. The Center makes extensive use of laser technology and computerized field testing equipment, and is the site of the first clinical high resolution
ultrasound biomicroscope in the United States.
Corneal topography, developed by physicians at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, gives computer enhanced images of the cornea. Our state of the art Laser Vision Correction Center opened in 1997, and provides surgeons the opportunity to perform all aspects of refractive surgery including laser,
incisional, and corneal implant techniques.
