A message from the Chairman

Joseph Walsh, MDWelcome to the website of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai's (NYEE) Department of Ophthalmology. Whether you are a patient or family member, or a colleague in medicine and science, we hope you will find information of service.

More than 80,000 patients a year come to New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for the highest possible quality care for their vision problems. With such a high volume of cases, we have the experience to handle the most complex eye problems on a routine basis.

Experience counts. New York Eye and Ear Infirmary was founded in 1820 by two pioneers who were most cognizant of the vital role vision plays in each of our lives. They had goals to learn about and treat eye disease, to preserve vision for their time, and also to make sure that vision is improved for all generations to follow. As we approach our 200th Anniversary, we continue to be true to our founders’ mission of Excellence in Patient Care, Education and Research.

The Ophthalmology Department is pledged to:

This web site is designed to not only present our 188-year history and recount the contributions of many who have made New York Eye and Ear Infirmary world renowned in eye, but also to invite you to explore the many activities at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

You will find:

Patients seeking information on eye disease and, if required, appointments to see one of our many outstanding faculty members for a consultation and possible treatment

Individuals seeking to participate in our many educational choices including: Residency, Fellowships, Observerships, Medical Student Electives, Postgraduate Courses (including on-line) and a rich conference schedule including Grand Rounds, Visiting Professors and Research Day.

The various research projects listed are informational as well as opportunities for those to participate both for their own benefit as well as for the improvement for the future to secure better vision for all.

We welcome your comments and questions. I am sure, as you navigate our site, you will see why I, and all members of NYEE, are honored, proud and, also aware of the great responsibility that goes with this great opportunity.
