World-Renowned Specialty Hospital Becomes Continuum's Fourth Member Institution
New York, NY (August 1999) -- The Board of Directors and The Life Members of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
(NYEEI) - one of the world’s preeminent specialty hospitals and a health care provider in New York for almost 180 years - recently approved an agreement for the 103-bed institution to become the fourth member of Continuum Health Partners, Inc., one of the metropolitan area's largest hospital networks, it was announced by Peter Frelinghuysen, Chairman of the Board of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Morton P. Hyman, Chairman of the Board of Continuum Health Partners, Inc. NYEEI joins Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center and Long Island College Hospital in the Continuum network. With the addition of
NYEEI, Continuum broadens its network of medical services, which includes the east and west sides of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the other New York City boroughs and Westchester County. The expanded system comprises 3,400 certified beds; an annual operating budget of $1.6 billion; a medical staff of 5,200 physicians and 17,000 employees. The expanded partnership brings together four prestigious academic hospitals, each with a long tradition of service and commitment to excellence in patient care, education and research. Founded in 1820, NYEEI is the oldest specialty hospital in America. With more than 140,000 outpatient visits and almost 19,000 surgical procedures annually, it is a recognized leader in the fields of eye, ear, nose and throat care. Its ophthalmology and otolaryngology departments are consistently ranked among the best in the country and it also is a recognized leader in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Several years ago, NYEEI took aggressive steps to meet the challenges of a changing health care delivery system by shifting many of its services from the inpatient to the outpatient setting. It also has been very successful in the managed care arena; almost 90 percent of its physicians are represented on managed care plans, and managed care makes up over 20 percent of NYEEI’s patient volume.

The Board of Continuum expands to 19 members from its former complement of 15; the four new seats will be filled by members of the NYEEI Board of Directors, including the Chairman of the Board of
NYEEI. Morton P. Hyman, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Beth Israel, will continue to serve as Chairman of Continuum. Robert G. "The outstanding services provided at New York Eye and Ear, combined with those of our three sister institutions, strengthen further the Continuum network, and provide an even greater range of care to all of our patients." In welcoming
NYEEI, Mr. Hyman noted: "For almost 180 years, New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has faithfully served the people of New York and, indeed, individuals from around the world who have turned to this outstanding institution for its many specialty services. These services, combined with the primary care and other specialty strengths of Beth Israel, St. Luke’s-Roosevelt and Long Island College Hospital, enhance Continuum’s ability to provide the highest quality, most comprehensive care. We warmly welcome the Board of Directors, physicians and staff of New York Eye and Ear into our growing Continuum community."
