The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a one-month elective to fourth year medical students throughout the United States. This popular and competitively sought after rotation allows participants hands-on experience in clinical ophthalmology through general clinics, sub-specialty clinics, and exposure to ophthalmic surgeries at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
The ophthalmology elective is geared toward students who are considering a career in ophthalmology. Core reading materials are supplied to each participant and a vast array of audiovisual materials are available to supplement the lecture series. The students are encouraged to attend all lectures and conferences, and observe surgery in the operating room. In clinic, the students will have the opportunity to work-up selected patients under the supervision residents and faculty. Goals of this elective include learning ocular anatomy, taking an ophthalmic history, performing the basics of the eye exam, and understanding key ophthalmic disorders and diseases. At the completion of the elective, an exam is given which covers core material. There is immediate grading and feedback, to maximize learning and allow the student to address any questions.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a surgical subspecialty rotation for senior medical students from New York Medical College. This rotation was created in conjunction with the NYMC Department of Primary Care, and provides an intensive one to two week exposure to the essentials of clinical ophthalmology. Students participating in this rotation have opportunity to see patients in general ophthalmology clinics, work with residents and faculty, attend lectures and conferences, and observe ophthalmic surgical cases in the operating room. The primary goal of this rotation is to gain first hand experience in the field of ophthalmology and learn the basics of the comprehensive eye examination.
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a specialty rotation in ophthalmology for residents of Beth Israel Medical Institute in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine. The focus of this rotation is on learning appropriate evaluation and management of ocular emergencies and conditions by the primary care provider. Visiting residents will have the opportunity to observe and evaluate patients in the urgent care and general clinic setting, attend lectures and grand rounds, and work with residents and faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology.
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a one-month international clinical elective for select students from countries outside the United States. The program focuses on enhancing knowledge in general ophthalmology and ophthalmic subspecialties. Participants receive hands-on experience in clinical ophthalmology through general clinics, sub-specialty clinics, and exposure to ophthalmic surgeries at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Our program is 4 weeks for students in their final year of medical school. The medical students requesting elective rotations require the following
New York states mandates that all visiting students from foreign schools obtain a letter of eligibility from the state
You must complete the entire application entirely, and have it SIGNED & SEALED by your school and Dean of the Medical School. ALL supporting documents and health information, must accompany the application. Application requests cannot be used as support for VISA applications.
You must be able to independently obtain a VISA to travel to the United States from your local US Department State Office.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a one-month international clinical observership for select residents and physicians from countries outside the United States. The program focuses on enhancing knowledge in ophthalmic subspecialties including cornea, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics, pathology, pediatric ophthalmology and retina. Participants in the observer program are able to observe the activities of our department including clinics, surgery, scheduled conferences, and Grand Rounds. In addition observers have the opportunity to be involved in the extensive research program here at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
