The expansion of our medical student and visiting resident programs continues The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s long tradition of excellence in education and quality patient care, by providing training to doctors at all levels of their professional development.

Medical Students

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary offers a month long elective program to fourth year medical students throughout the United States. This popular and competitively sought after rotation allows participants hands-on experience in clinical ophthalmology in general clinic, as well as exposure to all of the sub-specialty clinics available at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Core reading materials are supplied to each participant, and a vast array of audiovisual materials are available, to supplement the lecture series. The students are encouraged to attend all lectures and conferences, and may observe surgery in the operating room. In clinic, the students work-up selected patients, under the supervision and guidance of both the resident and attending staff. These interactions enhance the learning and teaching process for both the resident and the student. At the completion of the rotation, a quiz is given covering the core material. There is immediate grading and feedback, to maximize learning and allow the student to address any questions.

Our surgical subspecialty rotation for senior students from the New York Medical College, run in conjunction with the Department of Primary Care, provides an intensive week long exposure to the essentials of Clinical Ophthalmology. The Department of Primary Care has developed this surgical subspecialty rotation for all senior students and has selected The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary as a major teaching facility for this rotation in Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, allowing us to further interact with our colleagues in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Residents of Affiliated Institutions

In addition to the senior medical students, we offer rotations to affiliated institutions’ residents in emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family practice. The focus is on the appropriate management of ocular emergencies by the primary care provider. The visiting residents interaction with the ophthalmology residents and attending physicians enhances the education, collegial atmosphere and common goal of quality patient care for all the residents and students involved.

International Observer Program

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has an observer program for visiting international medical students and physicians. Although hands on patient contact is restricted, participants in this observer program can observe and learn in all ophthalmology clinics, and the operating rooms. Attendance at all lectures and courses is also encouraged. To participate in the observer program, an application form and insurance documentation must be completed by the sponsoring institution and visa requirements met by the applicant in advance.
