When medication, lifestyle changes and comfortable environment fail to treat a sleepdisorder, specialized testing and/or surgery may be needed. NYEE has a home-like, quiet Sleep Center, under the direction of board certified pulmonologists and specialists in sleep medicine, and trained technicians who monitor and collect data from adult and pediatric patients.
Sleep studies, or nocturnal polysomnography, screen for sleep-disordered breathing (including sleep apnea), poor sleeping efficiency (not enough REM) and periodic limb movements. Titration studies include the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP). Fatigue studies, or multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT), are conducted during the day and screen for narcolepsy.
Surgical options range from simple in-office procedures and dental devices to complex nasal airway and/or mouth and throat surgery. One of the most common is uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (“UPPP”), which enlarges the airway by shortening the uvula and soft palate. Other procedures include coblator posterior glossectomy and tongue suspensions for obstructions in the oral cavity and septoplasty/turbinectomy to correct defects in structures of the nose.
