NEW YORK, NY (May 2013) -- In what has become a highly-sought-after educational activity for New York area ophthalmology residents, the 3rd annual Introduction to Phacoemulsification and Intraocular Lens Implants for 2nd Year Residents was held by New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and The Jorge N. Buxton, MD Microsurgical Education Foundation on May 18. Taught by expert cataract surgery faculty, the course emphasized wet lab instruction in the critical skills needed to perform cataract surgery: step-by-step phacoemulsification including the nucleus fracture and cortex removal techniques. Live surgery from NYEE’s state-of-the-art ORs was simulcast into a packed conference room.
The course is offered free as service to the medical community, and some two dozen future eye surgeons took advantage of this unique opportunity to get a “head start” on their senior year of training.
The event was sponsored by an educational grant from Abbott Medical Optics.
Douglas Buxton, MD, director of the Microsurgical Education Foundation, and John Aljian, MD, NYEE associate chief medical officer and VP medical affairs, were course directors. They wish to thank all faculty and staff who participated:
