New York Eye and Ear Infirmary To Hold Voice Screening for Professional Singers

New York, NY (March 2012) -- Every year in April, otolaryngologists (ear-nose-throat specialists) and other voice health professionals worldwide join together to recognize World Voice Day. For the last five years, The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Department of Otolaryngology, Voice & Swallowing Institute has held a uniquely “New York” activity –helping performers from Broadway, jazz, opera, rock, pop, soul and rap – protect their careers by early diagnosis and treatment of throat disorders.
In celebration of the World Voice Day, The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in partnership with MusiCares and KayPentax, has scheduled its fifth annual voice screening for professional singers who may otherwise lack access to medical care.

The goal of the screening is to help voice professionals sing at their optimal level at all times, without developing voice disorders that can affect their careers.
Professional voice assessment including vocal use questionnaire, stroboscopic exam of vocal folds and physician examination are provided FREE OF CHARGE. This assessment can serve as a baseline for future voice care. Physicians and other specialists will diagnose any current problems, perform a comprehensive vocal injury risk assessment and teach singers practical voice care techniques.
Each singer will receive an information packet filled with tips on voice care and injury prevention as well as a summary of their assessment.

World Voice Day for All
The annual World Voice Day encourages men and women, young and old, to assess their vocal health and take action to improve or maintain good voice habits All members of the public can protect their voices by taking the Interactive Voice Quiz and using suggestions on the Special Care for Voice Users factsheet from EntNet.org.
World Voice Day and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
Each singer is asked to hit high and low notes while voice is recorded and vocal cords photographed.
Dr. Pitman (at left) discusses results of videostroboscopy with Hunter Herdlicka, who appeared in the Broadway revival of a Little Night Music. Hunter was instrumental in bringing the importance of voice screening to the attention of many young performers.
