NYEE Is World Leader in Providing International Ophthalmology Fellowships

NEW YORK, NY (November 2011) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary trains one of the largest numbers of international eye fellows of any medical center in the world.  In 2011, NYEE received 15 of the approximately 60 fellowships granted worldwide by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).

One of the primary goals of the ICO is to improve eye care and contribute to preservation and restoration of vision around the world by enhancing ophthalmic educational opportunities.  The ICO Fellowship program was created to help promising young ophthalmologists, especially those from developing countries, improve their practical skills and broaden their perspectives of ophthalmology. Fellows accepted are among the top graduates of their countries and must pass an examination equivalent to the American Board exams. In addition, only a fraction, representing the best of the best, have been accepted at NYEE.

“ICO fellows acquire specialized diagnostic, medical and surgical techniques which equip them to become leaders in eye care in their home countries,” says Robert Ritch, MD, NYEE’s Chief of Glaucoma Services and Director of International Training, who is instrumental in obtaining the fellowships. One ophthalmologist who performed his ICO fellowship in 2003 rose to full professor, then chairman, then assistant dean, after returning to Jordan. Another is full professor and Director of the Stem Cell Institute in Beijing.
