Director of Breast Services Appointed at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary

Rachel Wellner, MD, MPHNEW YORK, NY (October 2011) -- As one of the New York region’s leading hospitals for specialties involving microsurgical techniques, The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary utilizes its uniquely equipped, state-of-the-art facilities for breast surgery as well as reconstructive breast surgery. More than 17 physicians are part of its growing program.  NYEE’s goal is to provide additional options for breast patients in a personalized, convenient, supportive location in lower Manhattan.

To further the expansion of breast care, The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary has appointed Rachel B. Wellner, MD, MPH, to a newly created position as Director of Breast Services. She is an oncologic surgeon who provides comprehensive care and coordination of treatment for patients who require lumpectomy and mastectomy.  Dr. Wellner has special expertise in nipple-sparing and skin-sparing mastectomy, and clinical focus in benign and malignant disease of the breast, axillary lymph node dissection and sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast sonography, indwelling ports for chemotherapy, and high-risk screening and management.

A magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Wellner received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and a master’s of public health from Columbia University.  She completed residency at Mount Sinai Department of Surgery and a fellowship in breast surgery at John Wayne Cancer Institute.

Dr. Wellner is certified by the American Board of Surgery and an incoming fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  She has published several papers and abstracts on aspects of oncologic surgery, as well as the textbook Aging, Heart Disease, and Management and is currently editing a book on breast disease. She is an active member of the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group and Society of Surgical Oncology.
