NYEE’S 2011 Gala is October 27

Celebrating a New Generation of Physician Leaders

2011 GalaNEW YORK, NY (July 2011) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s 2011 “Thanks for Giving” Ball will take place on Thursday, October 27 from 6 PM to 10:00 PM at “583 Park,” an elegant banquet space on Park Avenue and 63rd Street in Manhattan.  The Gala benefits the hospital’s Surgical Suite Initiative, a $13 million expansion of the operating rooms which are among the busiest in New York.

2011 will be the year that The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary honors emerging physician leaders as it also celebrates the many generations who brought New York Eye and Ear Infirmary to a position of world leadership, as evidenced by its consistent rank among America’s Best Hospitals by US News & World Report.  Such recognitions date back to the historic young founders, John Kearney Rodgers, MD, and Edward Delafield, MD, who mere years out of medical school established New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1820 as the nation’s first specialty hospital.

To exemplify a new generation of medical leaders, the NYEE Gala honors two physician-surgeons who have an extraordinary commitment to advanced research, innovative treatment and surgical excellence.

Michael J. Pitman, MDMichael J. Pitman, MD, director of the Voice & Swallowing Institute in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, will be presented with the John Kearney Rodgers Physician of the Year Award for his work in voice production and swallowing, and leadership as an advocate for vocal health.

C. Michael Samson, MDC. Michael Samson, MD, co-director of Uveitis/Ocular Inflammation in the Department of Ophthalmology, will receive the Margaret Loeb Kempner Humanitarian Award in recognition of his research to eliminate trachoma, a major cause of blindness in underdeveloped parts of the world.

The evening will be highlighted with a concert by internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter and composer, Chris Botti, followed by an exclusive “meet and greet” after-party.
