New York Eye and Ear Surgeon To Scale Higher Goal for Fund-Raising Campaign

Mt. RainierNew York, NY (May 2011) -- The 2010 Climbing for Sight and Sound campaign raised more than $20,000 in support of eye, ear, nose and throat services for children. Inspired by this success, esteemed New York Eye and Ear physician Dr. Stimson Schantz again has set himself an ambitious goal. From June 24 through July 1, Dr. Schantz will climb to the summit of Mount Rainier in Washington State. At 14,410 feet, Mt. Rainier is the highest volcano and largest glaciated mountain in the United States.

Dr. Schantz is training rigorously to be in top physical condition for this eight-day climb, which is organized through the leading mountaineering group, Alpine Ascents International.

As if this were not challenging enough, Dr. Schantz also is a member of the physician faculty of Expedition Medicine, an international humanitarian effort that makes medical care available to wilderness areas that are far from advanced medical facilities. From October 24 through November 8, 2011, Dr. Schantz and other mountaineer physicians from around the world will participate in a climb of Mt. Everest, and help to make their medical expertise available to underserved remote communities in Nepal.

We hope you are as motivated as Dr. Schantz by our Climbing for Sight and Sound Campaign . Please help us make New York Eye and Ear’s critical care expertise accessible to children and families, who do not always have the financial means to benefit from our services.

More than 30% of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary patients are children who come to us from around the world for specialized care of complex disorders of the eye, ear, nose and throat, or in need reconstructive surgery to correct congenital defects.
