New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Receives Federal Grant For Microscope Essential to Surgical Specialties

Congresswoman Carolyn MaloneyNew York, NY  (August 2010) -- Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney announced a $150,000 federal grant for The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, which was unveiled at a special event in an NYEE operating room, where she was joined by New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s President and CEO, D. McWillams Kessler, and hospital doctors and nurses.

The federal grant helped NYEE purchase a new Zeiss ceiling mounted operating microscope, essential to perform surgery on the delicate structures of the human eyes and ears.  Every piece of such equipment improves patient safety and surgical outcomes -- especially in pediatric cases, where such microscopes are essential to see inside children’s eyes and ears.

“The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary’s skilled and dedicated medical professionals perform miracles every day, restoring nature’s most precious gifts -our senses of sight and sound- to patients of all ages.  I can’t think of a federal investment that would pay greater dividends than helping restore the vision and hearing of my fellow New Yorkers,” Maloney said.  “I thank President Kessler, and the hospital’s board members, staff, doctors, and nurses for their leadership in keeping this wonderful East Side institution running for the last 190 years.”

“This latest, state-of-the-art microscope improves the quality of patient care and every additional instrument such as this enables the hospital to perform hundreds more procedures per year,” Kessler said.   “As New York’s only dedicated eye and ear surgical specialty hospital, it is a gift that enables us to keep providing more care to New Yorkers in need of our services and for that we are very grateful.”
