NEW YORK, NY, -- While many were on a spring break, some 57 volunteer health professionals including staff from the Continuum Health Partners, Inc., went on a week-long mission to provide eye care and surgery at the Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC) mission in Licey, Dominican Republic, a small town outside of Santiago.
The team saw 986 indigent patients and assisted 14 surgeons with 223 surgeries during the week, especially for conditions related to working outdoors without eye protection. Among the founders of the 15-year-old ILAC ophthalmology mission are Robert Della Rocca, MD, director of ophthalmic plastic surgery at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and chairman of the NYEEI Department of Ophthalmology at St. Luke’s /Roosevelt Hospital, and Darlene Della Rocca, RN.
Other volunteers on the medical mission included anesthesiologist Julissa Cruz, MD; attending ophthalmologists Richard Koplin, MD, Brian Campolattaro, MD, Chris Brown, MD, Jonathan Leon-Rosen, MD, Eric Lichtenstein, MD, Eli Marcovici, MD; CRNA Nelson Ko; operating room technicians Rosemary Rodriguez, Pedro Vasquez, and Elsa Simeon; RNs Orly Enrado and Elisa Torelli; and administrator Ralph Andrew.
