New York, NY (July 2009) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary laboratory has once again been awarded full two-year accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) in a survey process that involves on-site inspection and stringent review of staff qualifications, laboratory equipment, facilities, safety and management.
NYEE’s Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine has the distinction of being a tertiary resource and regional leader for ophthalmic and head & neck pathology. Special features include a surgical pathology volume of 13,000 cases per year, including more than 3,000 consultation cases originating outside the institution. Its Eye Pathology service, with over 8,500 cases per year, is the busiest in the world in this sub-specialty. Specialized microbiology services for rapid diagnosis of intraocular and corneal infection are also offered. Rapid pre-operative screening aids in efficient patient processing and utilization of the operating rooms so vital to the hospital’s 25,000 “same day” ambulatory surgery cases encountered each year.
