New Research in Neuro-Ophthalmology at NYEE and Other Continuum Hospitals

NORDICNew York, NY (August 2009) -- Mark J. Kupersmith, MD, chief of neuro-ophthalmology at NYEE, is the Chair of the Neuro-Ophthalmology Research Disease Investigator Consortium (NORDIC), which was officially established on February 6, 2009, supported by five-year grant from the National Eye Institute.

NORDIC is an organization composed of neuro-ophthalmologists and other doctors, structured to perform prospective clinical research in the subspecialty of Neuro-Ophthalmology.  There is a broad spectrum of  neuro-ophthalmologic disorders that collectively affect millions of people. Many of these are visual disorders associated with other systemic or neurological conditions and many fit the U.S. government definition as “rare” diseases and have not been adequately investigated.

NORDIC provides the organization and operational capability to perform multi-site observational and treatment trials with the support of the National Eye Institute the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies.

NORDIC will eventually include nearly 200 community and academic practitioners. The multi-site, open network approach facilitates the recruitment and investigation of powerful numbers of otherwise hard-to-find study patients, with a high degree of control over the scientific quality of the research projects.  The first disorder to be studied by the NORDIC network is idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

Headquarters for NORDIC, which directs this multicenter research organization, is the Continuum Health Partners, Inc. hospital system.
