New York, NY (June, 2009) -- Robert Ritch, MD, who holds the Shelley and Steven Einhorn Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology and is Surgeon Director and Chief of Glaucoma Services at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, was recently elected Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Directors of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), the most prestigious international organization for eye care specialists.
He succeeds H. Dunbar Hoskins, Jr., MD, executive vice president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in that post.
The ICO works with ophthalmologic societies to enhance ophthalmic education and the provision of eye care to preserve and protect vision for all people worldwide.
The advisory committee meets just before each ICO meeting, which takes place every two years, to evaluate issues relevant to international ophthalmology and vision and to make recommendations to the full council.
Dr. Ritch is known internationally for innovations in the medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma. He has co-authored or edited seven textbooks and over 1300 medical and scientific papers and other writings. In addition to his positions at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and as professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at The New York Medical College, he is the founder and medical director of The Glaucoma Foundation, which funds groundbreaking research and promotes public education about the disease. Dr. Ritch was one of the three organizers of the first annual World Glaucoma Day in 2008.
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, the first specialty hospital in the Western Hemisphere, is an affiliated teaching hospital of the New York Medical College. New York Eye and Ear has approximately 224,500 outpatient visits annually and over 25,000 surgical procedures per year.
