New York, NY (October 2008) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Ophthalmology Visiting Professor Lecture Series will host one of the world’s leading figures in ophthalmology—Jost Jonas, MD, Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Clinical Medicine Mannheim, Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany—on Thursday, November 13 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Infirmary, 310 E. 14th St., corner Second Ave., third-floor conference room.
Prof. Jonas has been one of the most productive and innovative investigators in the field. He is and is unique in being a leader in two different subspecialties: glaucoma and vitreo-retinal surgery. He is a member of the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress, which is limited to 50 members worldwide, and the Retina Society and the Macula Society. He is Secretary General of the European Association for Vision and Eye Research and a member of the German Academy of Science. He is fluent in several languages.
His groundbreaking research has encompassed the description and significance of peripapillary atrophy, morphologic diagnosis of optic nerve disorders, intravitreal steroid therapy, femtosecond laser surgery of the cornea, intravitreal cell-encoated drug delivery, nano-medicine, and intravitreal bone-marrow derived stem cell transplantation for retinal degenerations. He has published over 500 papers, including 50 this year alone.
Dr. Jonas’ topic will be “Glaucoma-Related Findings of the Bejing Eye Study.” At Grand Rounds on Friday, November 14, 7:30 to 8:30 am, he will present “Pathogenic Implications from the Glaucomatous Nerve Head.”
