NYEEI Hosts Postgraduate Training For Surgeons from Africa

New York, NY (October 2007) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Department of Otolaryngology was lauded in the October issue of AAO-HNS Bulletin for its humanitarian efforts in providing a unique educational opportunity to doctors from a most under-served region — Ethiopia ― a country of  80 million people and fewer than 10 ENT doctors.

Two recipients of overseas educational grants spent a month at the NYEEI in the world-famous temporal bone lab of the Jorge Buxton Microsurgical Education Center, attended lectures and observed all forms of otologic (middle/inner ear) surgery. Appreciation is especially extended to Steven D. Schaefer, MD, professor and chairman, Dept of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery; Christopher Linstrom, MD, chief of otology/neurotology, and Belachew Tessema, MD, an Ethiopian-born resident at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
