The Retina Center at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, the region’s largest, oldest and most comprehensive retina service, will become the Bendheim Family Retina Center on May 18, 2006, at a dedication ceremony reflecting long-term support of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary by the Leon Lowenstein Foundation, headed by Robert Bendheim. A gift of $1.5 million toward eye research and services was recently announced by Mr. Bendheim, president of the foundation.
The Retina Center, unrivaled in New York for its advanced research and technology, has seen a dramatic increase in visits from 22,000 when it opened in 2003, to over 30,000 visits today, much of the increase due to diabetic retinopathy and other retinal disease associated with the diabetes epidemic in New York and around the nation.

The 9,600 square foot Bendheim Family Retina Center is nationally known for its research and subspecialty clinical work in retinal detachments and tears, macular degeneration, macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, proliferative retinopathy, and other eye diseases such as uveitis and ocular tumors.
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary’s Advanced Retinal Imaging Laboratory includes pioneering technologies such as:

SLO-OCT (scanning laser ophthalmoscope – optical coherence tomography), a new diagnostic and monitoring combination technology for diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration patients.

Retinal Thickness Analyzer, used to monitor the progression of macular thickening in patients with diabetic macular edema.

3-D Ultrasound Tomography System, used to perform three-dimensional tomographic imaging of the eye and orbit to assess tumor growth

Macular Pigment Densitometry, used to measure increased risk of developing macular disease.

Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph II (HRT II), used to detect the onset of glaucoma be generating 3-D details of the retina.
