World's Fastest CT ScannerThe New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Installs World's Fastest CT Scanner

New York, NY (June 2004) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Department of Radiology recently installed what is believed to the world's fastest, most powerful computed tomography (CT) system, the Aquilion by Toshiba America Medical Systems.

The Aquilon scanner rotates around the entire body in half a second, so exams that once required 30 minutes are completed in a little as 10 seconds. In addition to being faster, Aquilion imaging is also more precise. It is capable of producing images 0.5 mm (1/50th of an inch) in thickness, providing more detailed pictures of the body's interior than traditional CTs.

For New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, combining these exquisitely thin slices with isotropic voxel reformatting means it can produce sagittal and coronal images of the orbits, temporal bones and sinuses while the patient lies comfortably in the supine position on the CT couch. Formerly, to get these views, a patient would have to lie motionless on the stomach with chin hyperextended for up to five minutes at a time.

Holliday, MD, director of radiology. “The rapid scan time and the more comfortable scanning position means nearly all of our pediatric cochlear implant candidates can be scanned without conscious sedation, decreasing anxiety and cost for the patients and their families. ”

Clinicians benefit from higher quality images, image reconstructions more specific to their needs, and the option to receive images stored on CDs instead of films and thereby review studies anywhere there is access to a personal computer.
