The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Holiday Ball 2003

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Holiday Ball was held on Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at The Pierre. The event raised more than $300,000, which will benefit children's services. 

Peter Frelinghuysen, chairman of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary's board and a distinguished New Yorker, received The Margaret Loeb Kempner Humanitarian Award for his "visionary leadership, compassion and generosity of spirit."

The 2003 Physician of the Year Award for excellence in medicine was given to three senior surgeon directors from the Department of Otolaryngology/ Head & Neck Surgery: Paul L. Chodosh M.D., Young Bin Choo, M.D., and Felix DePinies, M.D..

Susan Liebowitz, of New York City, was Journal Chairman. Physician Co-chairs are Steven Schaefer, M.D., chairman of Otolaryngology, and Joseph Walsh, M.D., chairman of Ophthalmology. WABC TV's Scott Clark served as the master of ceremonies.

The reception began at 6:30 PM, gourmet dinner followed by dancing to the music of the Hank Lane Orchestra, and a Celebrity Silent Auction.

Scott Clark of WABC-Channel 7 served as master of ceremonies for the evening's program. (The Disney Company, which owns ABC, has an active philanthropy division that supports charitable events such as The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary Gala. Mr. Clark also donates a considerable amount of time and energy to helping health care and other organizations.) 

Operatic singer Catherine Thorpe added a colorful note with the National Anthem.

NYEEI Board member James Kempner presented the Margaret Loeb Kempner Humanitarian Award, named in memory of his late grandmother, to the Board chairman Mr. Frelinghuysen in recognition of all his work to advance the mission of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. 

A unique and personalized gift was presented by fellow Board member Ed Nowak.

Distinguished members of the Department of Otolaryngology received the John Kearney Rodgers Physician of the Year Award.

Dr. & Mrs. Choo, Dr. & Mrs. Chodosh, and Dr. & Mrs. de Pinies shared a round of well deserved applause and recognition.

Steven Schaefer, MD, chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery, opened the Physician of the Year Awards and introduced Dr. Chodosh.

Now retired as chief of Head & Neck surgery, Dr. Chodosh devotes extensive time to resident education.

Richard Bellucci, MD, gave a moving and personal tribute to his longtime colleague and friend, Dr. Choo.

Christopher Linstrom, MD, followed with another eloquent tribute to fellow otologist Dr. De Pinies.

Robert Della Rocca, MD, added his congratulations as Chairman of the Medical Board.

At one of the prominent tables were: (seated) Judith &. Joseph Corcoran, Heather & Scott Clark, (standing) Dr. Sonja Tennaro, Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Brezenoff, and Dr. & Mrs. J. Robert Rosenthal.

The choir of St. Vincent's Medical Center lent a holiday spirit to the program. (and yes, that's Dr. Linstrom, in back row)

Robert Ritch, MD, chief of Glaucoma Services, enjoyed the festivities with his department's research fellows, family and friends.

David Intrabartolo, Stephanie Gass and Susan Singer of Human Resources were among the event's 380 guests.

Otolaryngology resident Dr. Tina He and guest Dr. Ivan Chen congratulate honorees.

 

The evening concluded with a late night sing-a-long with (left) Ed Nowak, and (right) Jay Wisnicki, MD at the grand pianos.

Mr. Frelinghuysen takes advantage of the elegant ballroom floor.

Good times had by all: hundreds of guests and staff who made the event such a success.
