Exhibit Tours NYC
New York, NY (June 2002) -- The New York
Eye and Ear Infirmary is one of several local medical centers hosting a public
education program at major malls in the metropolitan area. The exhibit, titled
"The Eye Site," was developed by the National Eye Institute (part of
the Federal government's National Institutes of Health), as part of its
National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP).
The exhibit,
which has already toured California, the midwest, and portions of the east
coast, is free and open to the public at the Kings Plaza Mall, in Brooklyn
beginning Tuesday, June 11 through Sunday, June 30.
Approximately
one in 20 Americans has low vision
The Eye Site was designed to
heighten awareness about low vision and increase referrals of people with low
vision to eye care professionals and specialists. The exhibit intends to
increase an understanding of the warning signs and causes, as well as steps
that can be taken to assist those who have low vision.
The Eye Site is geared toward a wide
audience varying from young children to senior citizens alike and aims to be a truly interactive experience.
Computer touchscreen programs
explain the causes of low vision, offer personal accounts of people living
with low vision, and provide a self-assessment to help people determine
whether they or someone they know may have low vision. Several short videos
that provide "hands-on" advice, as well as assistive vision devices
will be available throughout the show.
The National Eye
Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is the
Federal government's lead agency for vision research that leads to
sight-saving treatments and plays a key role in reducing visual impairment and
blindness. The NIH is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services.

Site Tour, visit The National
