Potential applicants are welcome to spend their senior elective rotation at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. However, applicants are discouraged from spending all of their elective rotations at various otolaryngology programs as a means of increasing the likelihood of successfully matching. Historically, such efforts have been marginally successful (Mattox, D.E. Cost-effectiveness of otolaryngology externships for residency applicants, Arch Otolaryngol. 1984;110:2).
Applications are reviewed by a subcommittee of the Otolaryngology faculty and approximately 12 percent of the applicants are invited for interviews. Interviews are traditionally held in December, last one day, and frequently include a party in the evening for the applicants. Invitations are based on performance in medical school, Part I (and II, if available) of the USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities, including participation in research. Applicants are welcome to visit New York Eye and Ear and its Affiliated Hospitals at their own discretion. Visits can be arranged through contacting George Alexiades, MD, or the Residency Coordinators.
Inquiries for resident positions should be addressed to:
