Audiometry (standard hearing test)The inner ear contains both the organ of hearing and the organ of balance. Evaluating hearing is critically important in diagnosing balance disorders and planning proper treatment. There are many types of hearing tests, some of which test inner ear functions that a normal hearing person would not know are abnormal.
For this test, patients are put into various head and body positions to see if these positions cause dizziness. During parts of this test, warm and cool water is placed in both outer ear canals. The warm and cool water stimulates the inner ear and sends signals to the eyes and brain. This test evaluates inner ear function, the relationship of the ear and eye, and the centers in the brain that control balance.
During this test, the patient is rotated back and forth in a chair and measurements are taken that give information about certain balance disorders. For example, the measurements may indicate that both ears are weak or the brain is not controlling balance properly.
For this diagnostic test, the patient stands on a platform that moves with body sway. CDP evaluates how well the patient’s three senses of balance (the inner ear, the eyes and the legs) communicate with the brain in creating normal balance.
