New York, NY (May 2005) -- The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary joined with area veterans' organizations, elected officials, community leaders and concerned citizens on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 by submitting testimony at the public hearing about consolidating the Brooklyn and Manhattan Veterans Hospitals.
Located on 14th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan (New York City), The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary is a longtime friend and neighbor of the Veterans Administration Hospital on 23rd Street and First Avenue, and strongly supports keeping the facility open. "We are in a unique position to understand the importance of their services to blind and visually impaired veterans," said Jean Thomas, director of public affairs, "especially the need for a location that allows mobility and accessible transportation, particularly the M-15 (1st & 2nd Avenue) and crosstown bus routes which bring patients safely to our doorsteps...While there are many hospitals in Manhattan, there is only one dedicated specifically to the needs of men and women with service-connected injuries."
It was also noted that patients of the Veterans Administration Hospital benefit from being in the heart of the city's health care community by having access to cutting edge research and clinical trials conducted with the affiliated academic medical centers only blocks away.
