The Cochlear Implantation and Children's Hearing Center is the product of several longstanding institutional and individual clinical programs dating from 1979. The Center includes five full-time faculty neurotologists, 17 audiologists at the masters and doctoral level, 2 deaf educators, 6 support personnel and research scientists. Physicians include George Alexiades, M.D., Joseph Arigo, M.D., Christopher Linstrom, M.D. and Simon Parisier, M.D. Together this team of surgeons have implanted more than 1400 people over 25 years. Cumulatively, 120 patients are implanted per year, making the Center one of the largest programs in the United States. The Center includes the only bilingual cochlear implant program in the New York Metropolitan region. All diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitative services for cochlear implantation are offered at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Treatment includes diagnosis, implantation and rehabilitation for English- or Spanish-speaking patients. Implantation of children can occur as early as two years of age. Patients must complete a rigorous screening process, including several clinical visits, several tests to establish or exclude audition, an ABR, a six-month trial of hearing aids for patients with any residual hearing, promontory stimulation in adult patients, and high resolution CT scanning to look for development of the otic capsule. Cochlear implantation surgery is performed at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Potential candidates for cochlear implantation must be seen by an otolaryngologist who specializes in disorders of the inner ear. Referrals will be made to a neurotologist who specializes in the cochlear implantation procedure. If you wish to inquire about cochlear implantation, please call (212) 614-8370, or (212) 979-4200 for a medical referral or to receive additional information.

For more info, visit the Children's Hearing Institute website which is available in both English and Spanish.
