
Dr Stimson Schantz is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1982. During this period, Dr. Schantz also received training in Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.
From 1982-1984, he served as a fellow in Surgical Oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas in Houston. He then joined the staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center as Assistant Professor of Surgery within the Department of Head and Neck Surgery.
In 1991, Dr. Schantz relocated to New York City at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he served as Associate Professor of Surgery at the Cornell University Medical Center. During this period, he was also appointed as Director of Head and Neck Laboratories. More recently, Dr. Schantz was appointed to his present position at the New York Medical College as Professor of Otolaryngology, Chief of Head and Neck Surgery at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary.
During the majority of his career, he has been actively involved in both laboratory and clinical research and has received numerous National Cancer Institute and other extramural supported grants involving the biology and treatment of both head and neck cancer and thyroid cancer. His research interests have included the area of genetic susceptibility, novel screening strategies for which he has received a recent patent, as well as chemoprevention.
He has over 200 publications including over 160 in peer-reviewed journals. He is a member, and has served in leadership positions of many head and neck surgical societies and committees, including his current role as surgeon director on the medical board of The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. More recently, in collaboration with international colleagues, he has founded the International Institute for Head and Neck Cancer and Tobacco-related diseases. He has received many honors and awards during his career including the Harris F. Mosher Award for outstanding clinical research by the Triologic Society. While at the Infirmary he has received the Paul L Chodosh MD Professorship of Head and Neck Surgery as well as the Peter H Schindler MD Memorial Award in recognition of dedication to patient care and resident teaching. He is recognized in the Castle-Connelly Top Doctors in American, Top Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area, as well as America’s Top Doctors for Cancer.
