Retinal Thickness Analyzer (RTA) - Talia

Tests Performed with the Retinal Thickness Analyzer

Retinal Thickness Analysis

The Retinal Thickness Analyzer used a computerized laser slit lamp to measure retinal thickness at the central 20 degrees of the macula, and overlaid a map of measurements on the patient’s retinal image. This instrument could detect and document as little as 34mm of macular edema, which may cause disturbances in central vision. Serial RTA studies could be used to monitor progression of macular thickening as diabetic macular edema increases or resolves in response to local and/or systemic therapy.

Optic Nerve Head Analysis

The RTA could be used to assess the optic nerve in terms of the cup to disc ratio, as well as other optic nerve head parameters. It was also able to monitor progression of nerve fiber layer thinning in glaucoma. Findings were presented in numerical values and could be shown in two or three-dimensional representation as well.

Anatomy Imager 3D Rendering

The RTA was subsequently equipped with an Anatomy Imager (AI), which allowed three-dimensional rendering of retinal thickness measurements over the fundus photo captured by the device. The program also permitted easy importation of an external image (such as a fluorescein angiography study). This 3-dimensional block could be rotated and cleaved as necessary to appreciate the relationship between abnormalities in retinal thickness and pathologies seen on fluorescein angiography.

Three-dimensional retinal thickness scans as seen with the Anatomy Imager.
