"DRIL Predicts Future Visual Impairment In VO-ME Patients" - Molly Walker
Presence of disorganized retinal layers -- a condition that presents on optical imaging -- was associated with worse vision among patients with macular edema, researchers found. Greater extent of disorganization of the retinal layers (DRIL) among patients with macular edema secondary to vein occlusion, as seen on optical coherence tomography, was significantly correlated with worse best-corrected visual acuity scores. Richard Rosen, MD, professor of ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, retina service chief and director of ophthalmology research at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, said that the study “codifies what we’ve already seen clinically,” that because of some degree of ischemia, the edema will resolve from the anti-VEGF therapy in some patients, but their vision will not come back to baseline. In the future, something like DRIL could be used as a biomarker, bringing us one step closer to personalized therapies for our patients, Dr. Rosen added.
