The founding of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1820 marks the beginning of both specialty hospitals and the training of ophthalmologists and, subsequently, otolaryngologists in the United States (see Mattucci, K. Otolaryngology in America: The Beginning. Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surg 1996; 115:487-499).

The Otolaryngology resident training program at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and 2 affiliated hospitals is under the sponsorship of New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York. The four-year program is fully accredited for four residents per year by the Residency Review Committee for Otolaryngology.

The current Residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary/New York Medical College and Affiliated Hospitals extends over a four-year period. The subpages that follow describe the program as of July 1, 2004.
